Neighborhood Guide: Living in Cedar Bluff

Hilly streets, a creek-side greenbelt and Mercer Street a short walk away — a closer look at one of Larkin Springs’ most characterful neighborhoods.

Just south of downtown and above the Millrace Creek greenbelt, Cedar Bluff is one of Larkin Springs’ most distinctive neighborhoods. Its streets climb and curve along the creek valley, and its homes range from 1930s cottages and mid-century ranches to striking modern infill.

The streets and homes

Much of the neighborhood was laid out in the 1910s and 1920s, which explains its mature trees and varied architecture. Expect pier-and-beam bungalows, limestone cottages, mid-century homes with deep eaves and a growing number of contemporary designs. Lots tend to be generous for such a central location, and many sit on gentle slopes with views toward downtown.

Parks and green space

The Millrace Creek greenbelt is the neighborhood’s backyard: a creek-side trail runs beneath limestone ledges and live oaks, past the old mill race that gave it its name, with a neighborhood pool and two small parks along the way. Founders Park and the springs are a short ride north.

Eating, shopping and getting around

Mercer Street — with its restaurants, boutiques and a small music hall — begins just north of the neighborhood, and the Saturday market on the Depot Green is a ten-minute ride east. Downtown is about five minutes by car, or a quick bike ride across the Millrace footbridge.

Good to know

  • Homes are zoned to Larkin Springs ISD schools; use the district’s school-finder tool to confirm the schools for a specific address.
  • Part of the neighborhood is a designated historic district, so check the guidelines before planning exterior changes.
  • Some streets are steep — worth considering if you’re planning a renovation or a new driveway.
