Then you follow one good link and find yourself on a personal site that has been quietly publishing essays about bird song, or bookbinding, or the history of a single street, for fifteen years.

The small web never went away. It just stopped being the default.

How to find it

Look for blogrolls: the old habit of linking to the sites you read. One good blogroll is a whole afternoon.

Subscribe with a feed reader. Most personal sites still publish an RSS feed, and a reader gives you a calm list of new posts with no algorithm deciding what you see.

Follow the footnotes. Writers who link generously tend to link to other writers who do the same.

Reply by email. Personal sites rarely have comment sections, but nearly all of them have an address, and the replies are often the best part.

A personal website is a house you own on a street nobody can bulldoze.

Why it matters

Platforms are good at reach and bad at memory. A personal site keeps its archive in order, its links working and its writer's voice intact. This journal is a small part of that tradition, and if you found it through a link on someone else's site, the system is working exactly as intended.

Personal sites, blogrolls and newsletters never went away.
