They are terrible at showing what it feels like to use \u2014 how it loads, how it moves, how it reflows on a phone held sideways on a train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Tessel Architects website we stopped drawing pages after the second week and built a rough prototype instead. Within a day we learned more about the project index than a month of mock-ups would have told us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a prototype tells you that a picture can\u2019t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How long a real project title is, in four languages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the images feel slow on a real connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where the keyboard focus goes after you filter a list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens when a client uploads a portrait photo into a landscape slot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We still design in a drawing tool for typography, composition and art direction. But as soon as a layout has to respond to content, time or interaction, we move it into the browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The web is not a canvas.
