Over three years and twelve issues we designed a magazine that changes every time while staying unmistakably itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundation wanted a print magazine that could sit on a coffee table and in a council chamber. Every issue has a different guest editor and theme, from housing to public toilets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design needed a strong identity, room for wildly different content, and a production process a two-person editorial team could manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-a7827e6b wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We built a grid of twelve columns and three typefaces, then gave each issue one variable: a single color drawn from the theme. Covers are typographic, set from a sentence in the lead essay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Craft<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Body text is set in a sturdy serif at a generous size for long reading. Data stories use a small set of chart types we designed once and reuse in every issue, so numbers are always easy to compare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-statement is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Readers collect it. Councillors quote it.
